Leigh Slayden
Born into an artistic family, Leigh Slayden grew up playing with clay, charcoal, ink, and oil paint, making her first sales at 16. While she entered a marketing career, she worked toward her Bachelor's degree at night, switching to an art major when instructors started asking if she was working on her Master's. She garnered collectors early, along with several public art grants before moving to St. Augustine for the final years of her career. "I've focused on mastering oil paint--followers can watch my works in progress on social media and sometimes buy them before they are even signed. While much of my work now is landscape--both local and global, sometimes in plein air--my early work focused on the human figure. Drawing live models in a limited time means one must work quickly to convey the mass, the form and light. I played with tone and color to achieve that in these loose figure drawings. The 'Bedouin Treasure' of a nomad's silver bracelet and veil is the opposite--a dive into the details of silver granulation and sheer folds achieved by a longer sketch time."

Mary Joan Hinson PhD
About Mary Joan Hinson, Brush & Oil: Mary Joan Hinson took painting lessons as a small child, developing a love of graphite as well as oils and the unique pigments they offered. ... She taught painting, drawing, and art history at Florida State College since 1995 and received a PhD from Capella University in 2005. This Series: Just off the coast of Georgia, Jekyll is a barrier Island and a part of the state’s Golden Isles. Measuring only seven miles long and a mile and a half wide, indigenous people called the Guale, originally inhabited the island, but began to be aggressively replaced by private land owners. Development came in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but was brought to a halt during WWII due to a government ordered evacuation. |
The state purchased Jekyll in 1947 for both preservation and security, and since, the island has become a popular tourist destination. The historic portions of the island boast the 1742 tabby ruins of the Horton House, the Island Club Hotel, and several “cottages” built by wealthy. On the ocean side, Driftwood Beach is an amazing example of erosional effects, salt air, and a bleaching sun, leaving fallen ancient live oaks and pines to litter the shore. Jekyll Island’s history, rich heritage, and shorescapes inspired this series called, Jekyll, Home of the Guale.
Lori Ann Sweet
It is hard to imagine when a pencil or paintbrush was not in my hands. The pencil began a personal journal documenting ones journey and influences. One repetitive theme is experiencing nature and the habitats or wildlife up close. This has led down paths least predicted and offered much more than one could ever hope for. This has impacted the subject matter when creating and offered valuable life time of experiences. The story began while growing up on the shore of Long Island, NY. Traveling became a part of every day adventure. I found comfort in learning about history, enthusiasm in creating, and peace in observation of nature. I attend the School of Visual Arts, NYC, NY and became a recipient of both the MFA and BFA. This offered an awakening on how to express and create artwork. When my husband and I moved to Florida in 2015 the colors and stories being told had developed into a new chapter. The artwork is a small sample reflecting only an afternoon or in one’s life. Their story will continue and there is so much more to express and be told. |

Karen Klefman
Originally from Michigan, I moved to Florida to attend Flagler college in St. Augustine - and bask in the beautiful sun and sea while earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a double major in Fine Art & Graphic Design as well as a minor in Advertising. I have balanced a career in both Advertising and Fine Art for almost 30 years. My art has been seen at the St. Augustine Art Association, Carrera Gallery in St. Augustine, Word Revolt in Atlantic Beach and many pop-up art festivals. I actually have a wide diversity of styles, exploring each by listening to my inner self which drives my creativity. My mind loves the intricate detail of realism, catching each shadow/highlight, a line or dot, each detail is beautiful bonding. |
My heart comes alive with impressionism, a looser flow of wide brush strokes interpreting nature with vivid colors and suggestive energy. And my favorite is when my soul connects with a much more abstract vibration, often inspired by nature but coming from a deeper space and energy. I love exploring multi-media textures, letting the paint flow where it wants, building on layers and watching metallics bounce light in a way that the art is always changing throughout the day. My art is an aligning of my inner and outer purpose–it is a pure expression of love.
I am so happy when my art connects with people; through a memory/place, a feeling of energy or peace, or when the light changes shadows and reflections that catch your eye and open your heart, when the art dances with the ever-shifting light that gives a feeling that words can't express... only art can.
